Scholarships

An essential factor and a big deterrent for those thinking about studying abroad is the cost of education. The expense of living and tuition for universities in other countries might be intimidating for many parents and students. A lot of scholarships and study loans are available for studying abroad, however most students are not aware of this. Full study abroad scholarships are offered by several universities, they cover all living and travel expenses in addition to tuition and study materials. Moreover, there are partial scholarships that usually cover the cost of tuition. A combination of loans and scholarships is also offered by certain universities.

A university offer letter is a prerequisite for applying for scholarships. Scholarship requirements are contingent upon the goals of the organisations providing the awards. The majority of scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit, but colleges occasionally award funds based on other factors. The majority of scholarships are intended for Masters and PhD candidates, but there are still plenty of undergraduate scholarships available to help students realise their goals.

Types of Scholarships

Merit scholarships: Majority of scholarships are strictly merit based. Institutions provide scholarships in to high achievers in different streams to promote excellence. Merit criteria could be academic or non-academic like music, sports etc.
Scholarships targeted to specific groups: Some institutions offer scholarships based on ethnicity, gender, region etc. Primary objective of these scholarships is to improve representation of people from disadvantaged sections of the society. These scholarships are given to meritorious students within such sub-sections of the population.
Country specific scholarship: Several institutions offer scholarships to study in specific countries, or to students coming from specific countries.
Subject specific scholarship: There are institutions which want to promote research in specific areas. The idea is to enhance the knowledge creation and augment the pool of scholars in a determined field.
Need based scholarship: These are scholarships given to students who are restricted in terms of financial backup or are less privileged monetarily.
